  Objectives
This course provides a comprehensive overview of the latest winter maintenance practices, equipment, and materials. It has been designed to compliment the training requirements for salt management plans.
  Who Should Attend
Technicians and technologists and others responsible for salt management plans, winter maintenance supervisors, patrollers, equipment operators, mechanics, and contract employees.

None.
  Accreditation Process
The Engineering Institute of Canada honours this course with 2.1 Continuing Education Units.

Intro to Environment Canada's Code of Practice
This module reviews the intent and content of the Code of Practice and environmental concerns surrounding the use of road salt and effective salt management practices.

Weather and RWIS
This module explains basic weather terms and reviews the various sources of weather information available to road agencies. Also discussed are the conditions that produce black ice and frost, major weather patterns in Ontario, microclimates, major influences affecting local weather conditions and the impacts of climate change on winter weather patterns. This module also provides an overview of Road Weather Information Systems, features of RWIS reports, and interpreting RWIS data to make decisions regarding operational strategies.

Salt Management
This module explains the requirements of salt management plans and best practices for effective handling, storage, and application of road salt and related freeze point depressants. Snow disposal, and run-off containment practices in the works yard are also discussed.
Minimum Maintenance Standards, Level of Service, Record Keeping, Safety, Hours of Service
This module examines the winter maintenance elements of the Minimum Maintenance Standards covered under Reg. 239/01 of the Municipal Act, Ontario's Road Classification System, local Levels of Service and operation practices, The details that must be recorded in the logs of supervisors, patrollers, and operators are also discussed. The safety section looks at the supervisor's responsibilities under Section 25 of the Ocupational Health & Safety Act, the hazards associated with handling freeze point depressant materials, and the relationship between driver fatigue and collision rates. The new national standards governing Hours of Work for operators is covered in detail and discussed in relation to scheduling winter operation shifts.
Calibration and Circle Check
Procedures for verifying the calibration accuracy of both dry and liquid materials are discussed.Pre-trip inspections that focus on winter maintenance equipment are also covered in this module.
Pre and Post Season Preparation
Considerations for optimal route planning are discussed, along with the details to confirm prior to and immediately following the winter season.
Snow & Ice Control
This module offers an overview of the most common freeze point depressant materials being used in Ontario, and how they work. The advantages of preventing the bond of snow and ice to the pavement and effective snow and ice control techniques for bridges, overpasses, intersections, railroad crossings, heavy snowdrifts, and other areas requiring special attention are also examined.
