Introduces you to the fundamental design principles used to estimate stormwater runoff and the principles used to design storm water systems.
Who Should Attend
Those who have had some exposure to stormwater drainage and design who wish to expand their understanding of methods of accommodating storm water runoff for minor and major design storm events, e.g. GIS technologists, draft persons, development design technologists, water resource and development engineers.
Each student must bring their own laptop with licensed version of Microsoft Excel 2007 or Excel Office 365 installed. Students should also bring a metric engineering scale, pens, and mechanical pencils (and computer reading glasses if required)
You should have good comprehension of high school math and be familiar with the use and manipulation of algebraic formulas and the use of Microsoft Excel software, as the course involves the use of these formulae and Excel worksheets to solve storm sewer design and related problems.
Any pre-reading on the use of Rational Method of sewer design, Manning’s and Continuity equations would be beneficial. Students should be able to create, format and use simple spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel. Familiarity with various pipe materials used and installation of municipal services would be an asset.
Passing Grade: 60%. Comprehensive final closed and open examinations.

Mohsin Ali Talpur is a professional engineer with over 25 years of experience in diversified areas of civil and water resources engineering. Currently, he is working as Development-Environmental Engineer at the City of Guelph. He reviews and provides comments on development applications; also manages development projects, which include infrastructure construction for new developments, environmental assessments and other environmental studies.
Mohsin has worked at the City of Markham as an Environmental Engineer and with Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA). He has also served in several Canadian and international organizations. In 2014, he had volunteered as an environmental engineering advisor with the City of Blantyre, Malawi, Africa to assist in improving their wastewater management system under Leave for Change Program.
Nahed Ghbn holds a Ph.D. degree in environmental engineering with more than 20 years of professional experience in planning, design, construction, and management of infrastructure, environmental, stormwater and water resources projects. Nahed is a professional engineer and working currently with the City of Brantford as a Senior Project Manager, Water Resources. He is responsible for developing and managing water resources and watershed initiatives, environmental assessments studies and leading the design and construction of various stormwater projects.
Nahed has extensive experience in developing and managing varying size programs on several environmental, water & wastewater, stormwater management, climate change adaptation, numerical modeling and municipal infrastructure topics. He has authored a number of technical papers and delivered numerous training sessions and programs. Is also an active committee member with WEAO Collection Systems and MOECC’s Wastewater and Stormwater Practitioners Group.
Maggie Liu is a professional engineer with over 20 years of experience in civil and water resources engineering. Maggie graduated from University of Waterloo with a master’s degree in water resources engineering. She worked as a Project Engineer with the MMM Group and as a Supervisor with Toronto Region and Conservation Authority. Currently, she is working as Water Resources Engineer with the City of Brampton. Maggie reviews and provides comments on development applications as well as high level watershed and sub-watershed studies. In addition, she manages large scale projects, including the two dimensional 3-way coupling hydraulic modelling study for the Downtown Brampton Special Policy Area.
